The Shevchenko Museum will present A Diary of War, an exhibition of posters on the Russia-Ukraine war by VMIU, a group of young, contemporary Ukrainian artists. The opening will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2pm, at the Shevchenko Museum, 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto, and the show will run until March 15, 2024. All proceeds from the sale of the posters will go to medical aid for wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
This exceptional poster exhibition reflects the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and its destruction of the everyday, normal lives of its citizens. Presented as a group visual diary, in these works the artists share their emotional responses to the war while reflecting on the destruction and preservation of their history and culture.
VMIU is a diverse collective of talented and exciting young Ukrainian creatives working in graphic design, book illustration, fine art, fashion design, digital art, film, performance art and more. Among the themes they interrogate and explore, in their multidisciplinary work, are: Ukrainian culture and identity, the human condition, societal issues and problems, human impact on the environment, and the profound psychological effects of war, to name a few.
