Shevchenko Museum, 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto
We invite you to the Shevchenko Museum for an unforgettable evening at our Lemko Pysanka Workshop, led by amazingly talented Nadiia Voloshchuk - a member of the National Union of Folk Artists of Ukraine.
Lemko pysanka is renowned for its distinctive and intricate writing technique, which sets it apart from traditional methods. Instead of employing the classic stylus, artists use a pin, delicately dipping its head into melted wax and transferring it to the egg's surface to form precise dots or teardrop-shaped lines. Creative masters may even substitute the pin with hair clips or matches, skillfully varying the thickness of the pattern to achieve unique effects.
The foundation of Lemko pysanka designs lies in a series of dots and dashes—straight or curved, often resembling a comma. Through careful combinations and arrangements, these simple elements come together to create the complex, mesmerizing patterns synonymous with Lemkivschyna. This region, nestled in the Carpathian Beskydy mountains, is the historical homeland of the Lemko people, an ethnographic group of Ukrainians with a rich cultural heritage.
In Lemko pysanka, each dot holds deep symbolism, representing the life-giving rain that nourishes and rejuvenates nature. This profound connection to the natural world embodies the spirit of the Lemko people and their artistic traditions, passed down through generations.
