Timeless Beauty: Wax Flower Workshop
Create a Mini Flower Arrangement Guided by Artist Nadiia Voloshchuk
Thursday, September 18, 2025, 6 PM - 8:30 PM
Shevchenko Museum, 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto
In the past, Ukraine’s wedding season began in autumn, after the harvest, and was marked by many cherished traditions. Join us for Timeless Beauty: Wax Flower Workshop - an opportunity to engage with one of them. Among the most enduring symbols of a Ukrainian wedding has been wreath, which, much like the embroidered shirt, carried meanings that reflected a girl’s region of origin, age, and social status.
Popularized by Queen Victoria, the white wedding dress and floral tiara style spread across Europe and, by the late 19th century, reached Ukraine. There, local artisans began crafting exquisite wax floral wreaths by blending European elegance with authentic Ukrainian artistry. The wax bridal wreath (voskovyi vinok) was especially popular in Vinnytsia Oblast, in the Podillya region, and remained in use until the 1980s.
A cherished cultural heritage, each headpiece was painstakingly crafted from natural beeswax over several days. Every petal was shaped, strengthened, and arranged in a specific ceremonial order. Such wreaths often became family heirlooms, passed down from mother to daughter.
In 2020, this beautiful craft was officially recognized and added to Ukraine’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
